2004 Toyota Corolla Transmission Shift Cable Replacement, No Start

    If you have a Toyota Corolla and it either wont start or wont move into gear when you move the shifter, then you will want to check the shifter cable and its bushing. These tend to wear out and the shift cable end will detach from the PRNDL lever. You can try and reattach just the end like in the video above or you can replace the cable itself. The pics below should help you get an idea of what is involved in replacing the cable.

    This is what you will see when you remove the center console to access the shifter cable...

    The cable is attached by two 10mm bolts under the air conditioning housing box at the bottom of the firewall. You will have to remove the SRS ECU because the cable runs underneath it. The two bolts are the hardest part of this job but it is doable with a little extra effort.

    The cable itself is also attached to the transmission shifter and it will need to be detached from there in order to be pulled out...

    When you pull the cable out, it will have to be done through the interior of the vehicle. Here is what the new cable looks like...
